Checkmates is a nonprofit association that works tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for many underfunded and often overlooked chronic and potentially fatal diseases. Checkmates has a particular interest in the funding and the promoting of awareness in the fight against gastrointestinal diseases, including, but not limited to Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. Our CEO, Justin Mirigliani knows the pain of chronic illness and its devastating effects on the lives of those who have the disease and those who love them. Justin was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in December of 2002. He battled the disease for 12 years before, sadly, he had to have his entire large intestine removed due to a severe precancerous condition. He will live the rest of his life with an ileostomy bag. Since September 24, 2015, he has vowed to do all he can to save others from his fate or worse. One goal of this organization is to do whatever is possible to make others aware of how these diseases silently disrupt and/or decimate lives, and in doing so, appeal to the compassion of others to donate money for research to end these diseases. Another goal we have is to assist children with Crohn’s and Colitis to go to a special camp or other events that cater to their unique needs. Toward that end, Justin has combined his love of hockey and fighting spirit and created a hockey team that plays charity games in the Philadelphia area. The ultimate goal for Checkmates is to have this awareness and money lead to a cure for chronic diseases of all kinds and to finally say, “Checkmate” to chronic disease!
